DR. JIN H. BYUN, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR

Jin Byun, DMA is an esteemed figure in the music community, currently serving as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Oratorio Society of Queens (OSQ). With a deep passion for choral music, Dr. Byun brings extensive experience as a conductor, educator, and professional singer to his role with the OSQ.

Having recently taken over as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the OSQ, Dr. Byun was filled with a mix of excitement, anticipation, and deep appreciation for the organization's rich musical history. He recognizes the OSQ's dedication and passion for choral music, and he is inspired by the commitment of the singers and their shared love for creating beautiful music together.

In addition to his work with the OSQ, Dr. Byun is also affiliated with Union College, where he serves as the Director of Music Performance and Faculty in Choral and Orchestral Conducting. At Union College, he brings his expertise and passion for music education to nurture the next generation of musicians and conductors. Through his teaching and mentorship, he instills a deep appreciation for choral and orchestral music in his students, preparing them for successful careers in the music industry.

Dr. Byun's expertise in conducting diverse groups of musicians has been honed through various esteemed positions. Prior to his involvement with the OSQ and Union College, he served as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Fieldstone Choral Society in Manhattan, NY, and the King's Youth Choir in Palisades Park, NJ. These experiences have provided him with valuable insights into the nuances of leading and inspiring choral ensembles.

Furthermore, Dr. Byun has worked with renowned educational institutions and their choirs, further enhancing his conducting abilities. As a conductor at Queens College, he auditioned and led select music majors in the QC Vocal Ensemble, while also conducting general university students and community members in the QC Choir and QC Choral Society. Additionally, he had the opportunity to conduct the UConn Concert Choir, a large ensemble consisting of approximately 100 members, at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Byun's educational background further complements his expertise as a conductor. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Queens College, Aaron Copland School of Music, a Performer Diploma in Professional Opera Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from Seoul National University, South Korea. These rigorous programs have equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of choral repertoire, vocal techniques, and the art of conducting.

In addition to his roles with the OSQ and Union College, Dr. Byun is actively involved with the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). He has been elected as the president of NATS South Korea Chapter, showcasing his leadership and influence in the music community. Through his involvement with NATS, he contributes to the advancement of vocal education and the promotion of excellence in singing.

Furthermore, Dr. Byun's commitment to music education extends beyond his work with the OSQ, Union College, and NATS. He has made a significant impact as a faculty member at Kean University for the past 15 years, where he has taught Voice and Opera. His students have achieved notable success, with several pursuing professional careers in theater and winning prestigious competitions such as the Schmidt Competition, NATS National Audition, and the New York International Competition.

With his vast experience in conducting, singing, and music education, Dr. Byun is dedicated to leading the Oratorio Society of Queens to new heights of artistic excellence. He believes in creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where singers can grow and flourish. Through carefully curated repertoire, transformative performances, and collaborative partnerships, he is committed to enriching the cultural landscape of the OSQ and the community it serves.
